If you missed our April 7th training class, you also missed a tour of this beautiful new/old home in the Fortwood area of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Designer Tatiana Zadora (Studio Z) acted as her own general contractor to reconstruct this old mansion from the ground up. Balancing historical committee demands with modern code requirements and a desire for maximum energy efficiency, Zadora has found autoclaved aerated concrete to be the answer for exterior walls, interior walls, and even ceilings. Both inside and out, the dwelling combines spacious modern design with old world charm to provide living space that is both practical and posh.

On the exterior, fresh grey stucco combines with the original brick. Wrought iron railings and thick columns finish the look.

These photos cannot do justice to this beautifully designed home. In the upstairs studio apartment, the kitchen is surrounded by a faux brick bar topped with tile and concrete. The ceiling, constructed of SafeCrete 3" cladding panels, is as smooth as glass. French doors frame a spectacular view of the Chattanooga valley.

Throughout the home, an array of textures compliment the interior. Smooth paint is offset by textured plaster. Tile is applied directly to the concrete walls. Glass block, brick, and other finishes abound.

The soaring chimney is constructed from SafeCrete block. Aerated concrete insulates the chimney from heat loss so that more heat stays in the home. A liner is used inside the actual fireplace to prevent flame erosion. The heat is no problem for SafeCrete materials.

On the exerior, faux brick offers an old world paint-over-stucco appearance.
